TOUR I
McMaster Innovation Park
McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) is Canada’s premier research and innovation park supporting startups, business, research and offering collaborative space to transform ideas from vision to commercial reality. Our mission is to help companies grow. MIP acts as a bridge between academia and industry. Supporting researchers with commercial aspirations and enabling students and entrepreneurs to develop their ideas in our incubator and accelerator programs, while also connecting industry with the technical prowess of McMaster University and other academic institutions. MIP is an integral part of Hamilton’s innovation ecosystem where anyone can find a multiplicity of resources to help begin your journey.
MIP has created a diverse ecosystem that drives innovation and venture success. Our network extends beyond our main campus. We can help point you in the right direction whether that is inside or outside of the park. An innovation ecosystem is a group of a number of participants and resources necessary to drive innovation. These participants and resources include entrepreneurs, start-ups, scale-ups, multi-nationals, students, government agencies, research parks, and so much more! MIP is at the very centre of innovation in Canada. Located at the tip of Lake Ontario, Hamilton is centrally located about 60-90 mins from Waterloo, Toronto, and Buffalo, NY. MIP has direct access to 3 of the most innovative cities in North America and all of the talent, resources, and diversity they hold.
TOUR II
CanmetMATERIALS
CanmetMATERIALS is the largest research centre in Canada dedicated to fabricating, processing and evaluating metals and materials. Scientific and technical staff in Hamilton and Calgary research and develop materials solutions for Canadian industry in the energy, transportation and metal-manufacturing sectors. CanmetMATERIALS deploys technologies to improve all aspects of producing and using value-added products that are derived from metals and minerals. Its research focuses on three industrial sectors that are big users of Canada’s natural resources:
-
The transportation sector - CanmetMATERIALS works mostly with vehicle, engine and component manufacturers who require new advanced-materials solutions to improve fuel efficiency while maintaining safety and performance.
-
The energy sector - CanmetMATERIALS works on components in clean energy production and reliable pipelines to transport gas, oil, biofuels and carbon dioxide.
-
The manufacturing sector - CanmetMATERIALS works on components for a variety of other sectors that rely on high-performance materials, such as defence, aerospace, health and construction.
CanmetMATERIALS also studies other aspects of sustainable development, such as how to improve process efficiency and recycle materials, and has expertise and facilities for the pilot-scale production and performance assessment of novel materials. It has unique facilities that can handle hot and molten metal in pilot-scale quantities. Its researchers also characterize the microstructures of innovative materials and assess their mechanical, corrosion, thermal and electrochemical performance.
TOUR III
McMaster University FlexLabs
FlexLabs is a commercialization space that gives researchers access to wet lab (biosafety level 2) facilities to help them advance their start-ups.
Located at McMaster Innovation Park, FlexLabs consists of five small wet labs, each with its own office. These labs are available for rent on a flexible and startup-friendly rate to start-ups founded by the McMaster community. FlexLabs is intended to help early stage biotechs meet their first critical milestones to secure follow-on investment so they can continue to scale and grow in the region.
