Evolution of Canadian Biohazard Guidelines

The presentation will:

  1. Provide an overview of all the standards developed and followed by the PHAC regulatory Office
  2. Identify some key changes in the Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines (First Edition) and the impact on laboratories
  3. Identify what changes have been incorporated into the Canadian Biosafety Standards for improved use and application by labs and our regulatory office.
  4. The challenges our office faces with performance based standards moving forward in the future.

Speaker: David Barnes, Regulatory Inspector, Public Health Agency of Canada

Determining Laboratory Design Requirements, Part 1: Process Overview

This presentation discusses facility design requirements collection process from concept to hand-over to the design team.

Key concepts covered are:

  • Understanding client operational requirements
  • Room Data Sheets
    • Content considerations
    • Supporting documentation considerations
  • Mapping of requirements to applicable acts, regulations, codes, standards and best practices
  • Functional Program document content

Experience from various lab relocation projects has shown that:

  • Clients do not necessarily know the implications their processes have on facilities
  • Designers do not necessarily know what needs to be taken into account when designing complex labs.

In this presentation the author describes what his experiences have been and how he has tried to address the issues that he has had to face.

Speaker: Peter Slinn, Relocation Program Logistics Manager, Booth Street Complex Project, Natural Resources Canada

Airside Efficiency: The Next Big Thing

HVAC represents 50 – 70% of the total building energy consumption in a lab! With the majority of commercial buildings being over ventilated, optimizing ventilation, starting with critical spaces, represents a huge energy savings opportunity. Join us to learn how centralized demand control ventilation solution is currently helping customers in Canada and beyond to dramatically reduce energy use and enhance indoor environmental quality across their university and healthcare campuses. Case studies will include a look at University Health Network, University of Alberta, University of Pennsylvania, University of California – Irvine and Arizona State University.

Speaker: Sarah Callahan, Marketing Manager, Aircuity, Inc.

Long-term Science Facility Sustainability: Much More Than Just LEED Points

Build on these three pillars of sustainability to ensure long-term viability and productivity of science infrastructure: design sustainability, operational sustainability, and program sustainability. Ian McDermott profiles planning strategies, project delivery models, design decisions and maintenance models that reduce facility lifecycle costs, minimize environmental impact from construction and renovation, and ensure high performance and flexibility for the science agenda today and tomorrow. He identifies key steps in launching a more holistic approach to science facility planning and investment, and scopes out the value in terms of cost savings, recruitment and retention, and facility/mission responsiveness.

Speaker: Ian McDermott, Senior Director, Research Facilities Planning and Safety, University Health Network

Clean Room Technology

The client required an upgrade of a recirculating Air Handling Unit to a 100% MUA with Heat Recovery, increased airflow and within the existing mechanical room location. Repurposing on site allowed for a reduced timeline and installation cost. The client has also received a $28,000 saveONenergy rebate, which is almost $1 / CFM.

Speaker: Vern Solomon, Owner, Environmental Systems Corporation

Laboratory Exhaust Fans and Energy Conservation

This presentation included discussion on the following topics:

  • Lab fan basics (including codes, standards, and constant volume vs. variable volume);
  • Lab fan/stack technology;
  • System effect and field built-up lab systems; and,
  • Energy savings and energy recovery.

Speaker: Andrew Davies, Application Engineering Specialist II, Greenheck Fan Corporation

Laser Scanning for Science Renovations

A focus on how sustainable solutions vary from project to project based on locale, client team, and other factors. If a panel of three presenters could be secured, this presentation could provide 10 minutes to each presenter to speak about a specific project or solution.

Speaker: Chad Kazina, C.E.T., Survey Sales Representative, Cansel Survey Equipment

University of Toronto Environmental Science and Chemistry Building – Sustainable Design Features from an Architectural Perspective

The Environmental Science and Chemistry Building, currently under construction at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus (UTSC), is targeting LEED Gold certification. The building energy model is currently achieving an annual energy reduction of 54% and annual cost reduction of 38% as compared to a minimally compliant MNECB 1997 building. While there are many mechanical and electrical design elements that contribute to the overall sustainability goals of the project, the architectural design features of the building envelope and the laboratory planning approach of this fume hood intensive lab building are a key factors enabling the project to achieve a LEED Gold rating. This presentation will look at exterior wall detailing that that substantially upgraded standard curtain wall systems to achieve a higher level of thermal performance and reduced unwanted solar heat gain in order to improve occupant comfort efficiently. The design of the teaching and research labs, which included the selection of high efficiency low flow fume hoods, sustainable material selection, optimizing space utilization, built in flexibility to minimize the impact of future changes in research and teaching methodologies and planning layouts to make the most use of day-lighting opportunities, is a major contributor to the overall sustainability of the building. We’ll also look at energy performance using the Diamond Schmitt Architects ecoMetrics tool to compare the UTSC building with other similar project types completed by the firm over the past 12 years.

Speaker: John Featherstone, Diamond Schmitt Architects

Lean Laboratory Planning

The use of Lean planning concepts for laboratory planning is a growing trend, focused on a deep analytical understanding of staff and scientific processes to inform the efficient design for workspaces. The goal is to streamline the design of laboratory space to better suit the intended scientific/diagnostic/analytical functions it contains. This is an inherently sustainable concept.

Speaker: Lori J. Penner, BID, PIDM, IDC, NCIDQ, Professional Interior Designer, Architecture49 Inc.

High Performance Ventilation Design in Laboratories

The purpose of this seminar is to demonstrate how mechanical systems and “once through air” can be optimized to reduce air changes per hour (ACH), reduce energy consumption and increase occupant comfort while maintaining space functionality. The focus will be on high performance ventilation systems with specific attention applied to mechanical system layout and the use of chilled beams or other technologies that reduce outdoor air.

Background information will be provided and case studies where high performance ventilation design has been applied will be presented. Topics to be discussed include the dominating component of the ventilation system whether it is the fume hoods or heat loads and the use of chilled beams as well as other approaches that reduce the ACH in the space. How these items affect the usability and user comfort within the space will also be discussed. During the course of presenting these design options, the use of advanced modelling tools such as CFD, will be examined.

Speaker: Michael Carl, Senior Engineer, RWDI

Efficient and Sustainable Facility Design

This presentation will benefit attendees by providing a guide to the sustainable rating systems applicable to new laboratory construction. It will also describe a holistic approach to sustainability which goes beyond any one rating system. Together, we will consider a systematic approach to the use of basic payback analysis and life cycle cost analysis. The presentation will outline the new technologies available to model the performance of engineering systems, and will use past project examples to illustrate passive and active approaches to overall building energy performance. Lastly, the presentation will give an overview of special products and technologies that can improve the performance of science facilities, laboratories and pharmaceutical production facilities.

Speaker: Kevin Humeniuk, MAA, LEED AP, Principal, National Sector Leader, Science & Technology, Architecture49 Inc.
